== Etymology == The [[w:Endonym and exonym|endonym]] *Rovenija* derives from the medieval Slavic tribe known as the ''Roveni'' (first recorded in Latin charters c. 680 as ''Rovenii''). The tribal name itself stems from the [[w:Proto-Slavic language|Proto-Slavic]] root ''*rovΡnΡ'' ("flat", "level", or "river plain"), referencing the low-lying settlements along the Rova River valley where early Slavic consolidation occurred. During the medieval period, the territory was [[w:Latinisation (linguistics)|Latinized]] as ''Rovenia'' or ''Rovania'', while [[w:High German languages|High German]] sources referred to the march and duchy as ''Rofen'' or ''Rowenland''.
