=== Migration and early medieval principalities ===
With the breakdown of [[w:Western Roman Empire|Western Roman]] administration during the 5th and 6th centuries, the region experienced successive incursions by [[w:Goths|Goths]], [[w:Huns|Huns]], [[w:Lombards|Lombards]], and [[w:Pannonian Avars|Avars]]. Between 590 and 650 CE, South Slavic agricultural communities migrated into the valleys, gradually absorbing the indigenous Romanized populations and mountain tribes.

By 680, primary sources identify the Slavic ''Roveni'' inhabiting the middle Rova valley. Around 720, a loose confederation of clans recognized Knez Dragomir as ruler, establishing the Principality of Rova. Positioned between expanding Frankish influence to the west and the [[w:Avar Khaganate|Avar Khaganate]] to the east, Rova became a tributary state to the [[w:Carolingian Empire|Carolingian Empire]] following [[w:Charlemagne|Charlemagne's]] campaigns in the late 8th century.

In 830, Prince Borut II accepted Western [[w:Baptism|baptism]], initiating the formal [[w:Christianization|Christianization]] of the territory. Resistance to church taxation and Frankish feudal norms culminated in the Revolt of the Old Gods (846), a [[w:Slavic paganism|pagan]] uprising led by eastern clan leaders that was suppressed by Borut with [[w:Bavaria|Bavarian]] military assistance.
