=== "Muggle-borns, What a Joke" === The book's opening thesis and its most contentious chapter. The argument, in short: Magic is genetic, and everyone already has it. Every human carries the magic gene because the capacity is universal, baked into the species. What separates a wizard from a Muggle isn't the presence of magic but an inhibitor: a second gene whose entire job is to keep the magic gene switched off through gene expression. * Muggles inhibitor active. The magic is there, dormant, permanently silenced. * Pure-blood and half-blood wizards inhibitor switched off, inherited down the family line as a recessive trait. Nothing special about the magic itself; they just come from a lineage where the "off switch" was already broken generations ago. * Muggle-borns the inhibitor misfires spontaneously. No wizarding ancestry required, no inheritance, no bloodline. Just a genetic mutation that flips the switch that was supposed to stay put. From this the chapter draws its knife-twist: the entire pure-blood mythology is a fraud. Wizarding families didn't inherit some rare gift that they inherited a defect, a broken inhibitor passed down like a family heirloom nobody understood. The "purest" bloodlines are simply the ones who've been genetically malfunctioning the longest. Muggle-borns, far from being lesser, are proof that the whole system is arbitrary: the gene was always there, waiting, in everyone. Blood status doesn't measure how much magic you have. It measures how long your family has been getting the biology wrong on purpose. The chapter title's contempt β "what a joke" β is aimed squarely at the hierarchy, not the Muggle-borns. The joke is that an entire society organized itself around a mutation and then called the mutation nobility.
