Editing Kingdom of Rovenia (section)

Contemporary era
Following Krešič's death in 1980, ethnic tensions, rising public debt, and demands for political democratization destabilized the socialist regime. In late 1989, mass protests in Veligrad led to the collapse of Communist rule. Free multi-party elections held in March 1990 brought a coalition of reformists and constitutional monarchists to power.

In 1994, a national referendum on the restoration of the constitutional monarchy passed with a 51.7% majority. Exiled Crown Prince Aleksandar returned to the country and was crowned as King Aleksandar III in October 1995 under a newly ratified democratic constitution. The new system established the monarch as a purely ceremonial head of state with strict parliamentary limitations.

Rovenia joined NATO's Partnership for Peace in 1998, became a full member of the European Union in 2004, and joined the Eurozone in 2009. Following the death of King Aleksandar III in 2023, his eldest daughter succeeded him as Queen Katarina I, becoming the nation's first reigning queen since the medieval era.
