Liceo Artistico Edgardo Mannucci is a state secondary art school (liceo artistico) in the Marche region of Italy. Its main campus is in Ancona, with associated campuses (sedi associate) in Jesi and Fabriano. Like other Italian licei artistici, it offers a five-year course of study that combines a general academic core with specialized training in the visual and applied arts. The school is named after the sculptor Edgardo Mannucci, who directed it in its early years and shaped its identity as a scuola-bottega (school-workshop).
The institute operates under the Italian Ministry of Education with the code ANSD01000Q.
History
[edit]The school has operated since 1961, when the Ministry of Public Instruction accepted a request from the local administration to fill a gap in the city's provision of schools. In the years immediately following, it drew on the decisive contribution of the sculptor Edgardo Mannucci, both in its teaching method and in its broader vision of the role of artistic training. Conceiving of art as continuous research arising from dialogue with young students, Mannucci ran the school as a studio and workshop, tying his own artistic practice directly to its teaching. Founded as the Istituto Statale d'Arte of Ancona, it was later named in his honour; following the 2010 national reform of upper secondary education, the former istituto d'arte was reorganized as a liceo artistico.
In 1989 (school year 1989–90) a detached campus was opened in Jesi, within School District no. 8, to provide training in the applied arts and to renew the local goldsmithing tradition through workshops in metalwork and decorative painting (didattica del saper fare). The Fabriano campus, founded in 1979 within School District no. 7, long specialized in advertising graphics and photography in a strongly industrial area, helping many graduates enter the fields of visual and advertising communication; in the 1996/97 school year it was merged into the Istituto d'Arte "E. Mannucci" of Ancona, joining the provincial centre for artistic education.
Exchange students
[edit]Toemkun Panatkool (born 29 December 2010 in Bangkok), better known as Aobaom, is a Thai exchange student attending the Liceo Artistico Edgardo Mannucci during a ten-month exchange. He studies at the school's main campus in Ancona, taking part in the regular five-year liceo artistico programme alongside Italian classmates.
Previously educated at the Panyapiwat Institute of Management Demonstration School (Satit Panyapiwat) in Bangkok, he is known in his home context as a co-founder and central figure of the student collective The ramp. He has longstanding interests in illustration and visual design, which align with his studies at the school.
Campuses
[edit]The institute is organized across three campuses:
- Ancona (main campus, code ANSD01000Q) — Via Michelangelo Buonarroti 12, 60125 Ancona. Offers Architettura e ambiente, Arti figurative, Audiovisivo e multimediale, Design, and Scenografia.

Programs
[edit]As a liceo artistico, the school organizes its upper years into specialized tracks (indirizzi). Across the three campuses these are:

An evening course (corso serale) is also offered. The first two years (biennio) are shared across tracks, with students choosing a specialization from the third year onward.
Curriculum
[edit]The curriculum blends a common academic core with art-specific subjects over five years, structured in a two-year primo biennio, a two-year secondo biennio, and a final (fifth) year.
In the primo biennio (34 hours per week), a common area of humanistic and scientific subjects (21 hours) is paired with a characterizing artistic area (13 hours) in which students sample the specific subjects of all the tracks offered in the later years. In the secondo biennio and fifth year (35 hours per week), the common area continues (23 hours in the second biennio, 21 in the fifth year) alongside a track-specific area emphasizing design and project work in dedicated workshops (12 hours in the second biennio, 14 in the fifth year).

It also supports direct entry into professional roles tied to the chosen track, such as designer of decorative elements, illustrator and multimedia animator, and technical collaborator for scenography, cinema, and television.
Namesake
[edit]Edgardo Mannucci (Fabriano, 14 June 1904 – Arcevia, 21 November 1986) was an Italian sculptor associated with abstract and informal art. The son of a marble artisan, he moved to Rome in 1927, where he became a pupil of the sculptor Quirino Ruggeri and formed a close friendship with the painter Corrado Cagli. From 1938 he taught at the Liceo Artistico in Rome. After military service and captivity during the Second World War, he returned to teaching and, around 1950–51, became one of the first in Italy to weld metal directly in his sculpture; he was close to the "Origine" group and a friend of Alberto Burri. In 1962 he moved to the Istituto d'Arte of Urbino and subsequently served as principal of the art institutes of Cagli, Fano, and Ancona. In 1966 he received a gold medal from the President of the Republic for his artistic work. His pieces are held in collections including the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The former Istituto Statale d'Arte of Ancona — now the Liceo Artistico Mannucci — was named in recognition of his long and formative teaching career.
